History of Cuijk

Roman History

Cuijk is one of the oldest inhabited places in the Netherlands, with a history that stretches back more than two thousand years. Its story begins in the Roman era, when the settlement known as Ceuclum was founded along the River Meuse (Maas). Thanks to its location on a major Roman trade and military route between Nijmegen (Ulpia Noviomagus) and Bavay in northern France

War History

Cuijk, located on the River Maas in the province of North Brabant, has a long and turbulent history shaped by war and conflict. The area has been inhabited since Roman times — in fact, Cuijk (known as Ceuclum in Latin) was an important Roman settlement with a bridge crossing the Maas, making it a key strategic point. During the Middle Ages, Cuijk was part of the Lordship of Cuijk, an independent feudal territory.

Business History

Cuijk’s location along the River Maas has always made it a center of trade and craftsmanship. Since Roman times, the area served as a trading post and transport hub, where goods like pottery, grain, and wine were moved along the river routes connecting the Netherlands and Germany. In the Middle Ages, Cuijk developed as a market town. Local farmers, blacksmiths, and merchants traded their goods at the weekly markets, which attracted people from the surrounding villages.
